PS 335

PS 335 – The Academy of the Arts

At PS 335, Tutoring America grants have allowed the school to provide all students with Instructional Technology in the form of laptops for individual use at school. PS 335 has a vision and believes that providing Instructional Technology will increase opportunities for our students and our community today and tomorrow. Providing opportunities to enhance student learning through Instructional Technology allows students and families to realize their true potential and give them equal access to technology and knowledge – which in turn can open vast opportunities that will impact their futures.

The laptops will be primarily used by students for receiving additional Academic Interventions through SuccessMaker and similarly targeted software programs for the sole purpose on closing the achievement gap in all academic areas (ELA, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Digital Media).

JAMAICA

Moreland Hill and Little Bay Schools

Moreland Hill and Little Bay Schools

Rockhouse Foundation has raised and expended well over $3 million since its inception in 2004, renovating, expanding and modernizing public schools in western Jamaica. The Foundation focuses its resources on early childhood and primary education. Thus far, the organization has transformed five Jamaican schools and built the Negril Public Library. Two of its schools in particular have received awards and commendation for their achievements since joining the Rockhouse Foundation network of partner schools. Both were underperforming rural schools, equally at risk of closure because of poor performance and low enrollment—and both schools now boast full enrollment and are amongst the best rated schools in the region.

In 2015, Tutoring America (with support from the Jay Hatfield Family Foundation) provided Rockhouse Foundation with the largest grant in its history to implement a computer-based literacy and numeracy program called SuccessMaker in support of these two schools. SuccessMaker’s implementation and overall technical expertise has been driven and supervised by Foundation board member, Ian Coville. Now in its second year, all students in 1-6th grades at the Moreland Hill and Little Bay Schools devote several hours weekly on this powerful and engaging platform improving their math and reading skills. SuccessMaker is designed to allow each student to work at their own pace, advancing through each achievement level only when they have demonstrated proficiency and clear understanding of the underlying competencies.

Children in Jamaica usually have very limited access to robust technology. Rockhouse Foundation believes that all children deserve 21st century skills to compete in a global economy, and that reading, writing and math are foundational to becoming fulfilled, self-determining members of society. SuccessMaker is a potent and effective platform that complements the heroic everyday work of the great teaching staff at both schools.
